01. The Challenge
Capa’Cité is a non-profit organization that aims to help 10th and 11th grade students find career guidance. They organize a biennial fair featuring various professions present in the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland, which runs for two weeks. Capa’Cité approached us to facilitate the attendance of student classes during the 2021 event via a smartphone application, with the aim of extending the physical and temporal boundaries of the fair.
Our main objective was to design an experience that would reproduce online the amusement of the physical experience and resonate with a young audience aged 14 to 15 years old.
Only a few months in advance, we learned that the 2021 fair would be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our agile methodology allowed us to pivot the project towards a fully remote edition from the application, which secured Capa’Cité’s mission.
02. The Methodology
Exploration phase:
We conducted many design thinking and gamestorming activities with students to gather qualitative information about their habits. We sought to understand how students in 2020 preferred to receive and consume information, how they spent their time on social media, what they did with their free time, and what difficulties they faced when choosing a career. On top of that, we also performed a few in depth interviews with teachers and fair expositiors to comprehend their motivations and expectations.
The insights we got from these two exercices allowed us to come out with the idea of using gaming in order to engage with the students and reproduce the amusement of the fair online.
Validation phase:
We realized some rounds of user testing in order to validate the first concept of the application and evolve its fonctionalities and features according to the needs of the teachers and expositors and to the demands and preferences of the students.
Our agile methodology allowed us to pivot the project towards a fully remote edition from the application, which secured Capa’Cité’s mission.– XAVIER GOMEZ, CO-FONDATEUR & UX DESIGNER
03. The Result
In summary, we saved an edition of Capa’Cité by showing a great capacity of adaptation and by proposing a virtual exhibition experience adapted to smartphones. We paved the way for future editions, thanks to a digitalized reception of schoolchildren and avant-garde functionalities for the discovery of the professions in our region.
